Backwards layering seems to be the look these days. Take a cue from the Balenciaga Fall 2017 menswear collection, where shirts-on-shirts-on-shirts was the runway look du jour. There were doubled-up mens shirts, a bevy of hoodies, and then a T-shirt to top off the look. The cozy get-up introduced the idea of reverse layering, allowing graphic tees to take center stage as a cheeky upside-down touch.
Want to give it a go? Think outside of the box—or rather, the cloth—and pay attention to silhouettes. A classic striped button-down that peeks out from under a hoodie gives a laissez faire vibe to the 9-to-5-meets-weekender garb. And if you’re going to bring it to the next level, try throwing a tank top over the hoodie. But remember one thing: “Just make sure whatever you wear on top is large enough to accommodate the extra bulk of the sweatshirt,” says Vogue Senior Market Editor Kirby Marzec. “Otherwise you’ll risk looking like a Balenciaga bratwurst.”
